Road shoes for a park, something with grip for a trail. New shoes on a first run is a bad idea.
A layer you can take off
You will warm up in ten minutes, and a jacket you can tie round your waist beats being too hot.
Water, even in winter
Most social runs are under an hour, so a small bottle is enough.
A small bag if there is nowhere to leave things
Ask the club first. If there is no bag drop, a belt or a small pack keeps your keys with you.
